Collision with terrain, during approach
Preliminary data based on the notification from the Indonesian authorities:
The ATR 42-500 PK-THT departed Adisutjipto Airport (WAHH), Yogyakarta, for Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (WAAA), Makassar. The aircraft was chartered by the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for a maritime patrol mission. On board were 2 pilots, 2 cabin crews, and 6 passengers. While approaching Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (WAAA), Makassar, the aircraft was instructed by the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) to intercept the ILS Runway 21 via Waypoint OPENG at 5,300 feet. The ATC utilized a surveillance system (radar service) to provide the air traffic control service. The ATC noticed that the aircraft flew passing the waypoint and instructed the aircraft to turn direct to Final 21. The pilot requested a radar vector to Waypoint KABIB; however, the aircraft had already passed Waypoint KABIB. ATC then vectored the aircraft to intercept final on heading 240°, later corrected to 250°. Shortly after, communication with PK-THT was lost at 0420 UTC.
