As the helicopter was flying over the spur on the Mount Charvet ridge at low height and low speed, the blades of its tail rotor struck the snow on the ground. The impact and stress on the tail rotor drive shaft caused it to rupture in torsion, resulting in the loss of yaw control of the helicopter. The tail boom subsequently detached as the helicopter was falling, sliding and breaking up, until it came to a stop on the ground.
