Cable failure on initial climb during winch launch, attempted landing on reciprocal QFU, collision with ground

During the winch launch, the cable failed. The examination was unable to determine how this rope failed.

The pilot released the cable and then picked up speed. Given the height at which the failure occurred, along with the characteristics of the runway and its environment, she decided to land on the reciprocal QFU. The glider overshot the centreline of the unpaved runway and was too low for the pilot to reach it. The pilot attempted to land on the paved runway. The glider probably stalled as the pilot attempted to flare. It collided with the ground.
