Cat. 3 investigation report: report concerning an occurrence with limited consequences, based on one or more statements not independently validated by the BEA.

This is a courtesy translation by the BEA of the Final Report on the Safety Investigation published in March 2022. As accurate as the translation may be, the original text in French is the work of reference.

Note: The following information is principally based on statements. This information has not been independently validated by the BEA.

1 - HISTORY OF THE FLIGHT

The pilot, accompanied by a passenger who was also a pilot, took off from Lyon Bron aerodrome at 13:20 for a local flight. After flying over the Annecy region, the pilot headed for Lyon-Bron aerodrome. After transiting overhead Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport, she checked in at the MS  reporting point. The Lyon-Bron controller cleared her to join the base leg directly for a landing on paved runway 34. On final, the pilot indicated that she had configured the aeroplane for landing at a speed of 60 kt[1]. The controller informed her about a wind from 350 at 14 to 21 kt. The pilot continued the approach and landed. The aeroplane touched down hard on the runway and bounced two or three times. On the last bounce, the nose gear strut broke. The aeroplane slid a few metres and came to rest on the runway.

2 - ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The pilot indicated that the final was stabilised and that underestimating her height in relation to the runway, she had started the flare too high. She also stated that on the first bounce she pulled on the stick as a reflex.
A witness (instructor), who watched the landing from an aeroplane at the holding point of runway 34, thought that the pilot may have flared too late and the aeroplane touched down on three wheels before bouncing.
The broken nose gear strut was found on the aeroplane’s path, 90 m behind the aeroplane’s position.
The pilot, holder of a PPL (A) private pilot license issued in 2021, had logged about 115 flight hours, 60 hours of which were as pilot-in-command, all of which were carried out on the Tecnam P2008.
The ATIS at 14:38 gave the following information: runway 34 in use, low bird hazard, wind from 340° at 15 kt, CAVOK, temperature 14 °C, dew point -3 °C, QNH 1014 hPa, QFE 990 hPa.

[1] The airspeed in landing configuration (flaps extended at 35°) is 55 kt. The pilot applied a 5 kt increase, taking the wind into account.
