Accident to the Piper PA18 registered OO-VVA on 12/08/2026 at Saint-Hubert AD (Belgium)
Roll upset on final approach, hard landing short of the runway, aircraft flipped inverted.
Preliminary data based on the notification from the authorities of Belgium :
The aircraft OO-VVA was second in the landing pattern, following an helicopter type Airbus Helicopters AS350B2 Écureuil that came to EBSH for refueling.
After landing on runway 05R, the helicopter was hovering in the middle of the runway 05R then crossing the runway 05L to the fueling station. Approximately half a minute later, the OO-VVA came on short final on the same runway 05R. According to the pilot declaration, he suddenly experienced a loss of lift from the right wing and got the aircraft in a roll attitude with the left wing up and perpendicular to the ground. After a strong input on the stick to the left, he was able to stabilize the aircraft with the wings back on the horizontal attitude. Nevertheless, due to the loss of altitude during the recovery of the airplane and due to the relief of the rising ground at the edge of the runway threshold 05, the landing gear of the aircraft impacted the ground covered by bushes and the aircraft ended into a flip over on the back. The uninjured pilot was able to exit the aircraft by himself after the ground impact.
