Following the accident on 19 May 2016 over the Mediterranean Sea to the Airbus A320 registered SU-GCC, operated by EgyptAir, a safety investigation was opened. In compliance with the international texts in force, as the accident occurred in international waters, the Egyptian safety investigation authority, the EAAID, in its capacity as the State of Registry and the State of the Operator of the aircraft, was entrusted with the safety investigation.

The BEA appointed an accredited representative for France as the State of Design of the aircraft. The BEA was assisted by technical advisors from the manufacturer Airbus and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The American safety investigation authority, the NTSB, also appointed an accredited representative for the United States as the State of Manufacture of the engine.

In accordance with the provisions of Annex 13 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation (ICAO Annex 13), the BEA was consulted on the draft report. The BEA expressed its disagreement with the scenario identified by the EAAID (see Appendix F, page 660 of the published report).

Also appended to the report, is the safety study on fires fuelled by pressurised oxygen which the BEA provided to the EAAID in December 2023 (see Appendix E, page 495 of the report.) This study can also be accessed via the SAFETY STUDY tab.
